FAQs - WA State Gun Buy Permit
-
When does this law go into effect?
A. Starting May 1, 2027, a permit is required for new purchases of firearms, even if you already own guns. You do not need to retroactively get a permit just to keep the guns you already have.
-
Who does this apply to?
A. Every WA State person who wants to buy a gun. There are certain exceptions (below) such as military and police.
-
I have a concealed carry license (CPL or CWP). Does this law still apply to me?
A. Yes, it applies to pretty much everyone.
-
How much does your course cost?
A. $99. Certification lasts for 5 years and the permit is issued straight from Washington State Patrol. It will take them 30-60 days to issue, so it's best to complete this course sooner rather than later so you can be prepared to buy a gun.
-
What's the process of buying a gun?
A. We outline all the easy steps on our FFL website, HappyGuns.org
-
How intense is the "live fire" portion of the course?

-
What happens if I don’t take this course?
A. Without proof of completing a certified firearms safety training program, the Washington State Patrol cannot issue you a permit. Dealers will be legally prohibited from selling or transferring firearms to you.

A. You must complete certified training within the last 5 years to apply for or renew a permit.
For renewals, the “live fire” portion is valid for up to 10 years.
